When you need a dental crown to restore a damaged or decayed tooth, you'll typically have two options: a same-day CEREC crown made in the practice or a lab-fabricated crown that requires two visits. Both deliver excellent, long-lasting results, but they differ in how they're made, the time involved, the materials used, and the overall cost. What Is a CEREC Crown?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It's a digital system that allows your dentist to design, mill and fit a ceramic crown in a single appointment—usually within two hours or less.

The process begins with a digital scan of your tooth using an intraoral camera, eliminating the need for traditional putty impressions. Your dentist then designs the crown on-screen, adjusting the shape and bite to match your natural tooth anatomy. A milling machine in the practice carves the crown from a solid block of high-quality ceramic. Once polished and checked for fit, the crown is bonded into place—all in one visit.

What Is a Lab-Made Crown?

Lab-fabricated crowns are crafted by skilled dental technicians in an off-site laboratory. The process requires two appointments, typically spaced two to three weeks apart.

During the first visit, your dentist prepares the tooth, takes impressions (either traditional or digital), and fits a temporary crown to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is being made. The impressions are sent to the lab, where technicians handcraft the crown from a variety of materials—porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, full gold or zirconia—depending on your clinical needs and aesthetic preferences.

At the second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the lab-made crown is checked for fit, bite and colour before being permanently cemented in place.

CEREC Crowns vs Lab Crowns: Key Differences

Time and Convenience

The most obvious difference is time. CEREC crowns are completed in a single visit, making them ideal if you have a busy schedule, travel frequently, or feel anxious about multiple dental appointments. You leave the practice with your final restoration the same day.

Lab-made crowns require two visits and a waiting period of around two weeks. During this time, you'll wear a temporary crown, which is functional but not as strong or natural-looking as the final restoration. Some patients prefer the extra time to review the shade and shape at the try-in stage.

Materials

CEREC crowns are milled from pre-fabricated ceramic blocks. These materials are strong, biocompatible and offer excellent aesthetics, particularly for front and back teeth. However, the range of ceramic shades and translucencies is more limited than what a lab can offer.

Lab-made crowns can be fabricated from a wider variety of materials, including layered porcelain for superior colour-matching, high-strength zirconia for molars under heavy load, and gold or porcelain-fused-to-metal options where clinical requirements dictate. This versatility can be important for complex cases or patients with very specific aesthetic goals.

Fit and Precision

Both methods produce precise, well-fitting crowns when done correctly. CEREC technology relies on digital scanning and computer-aided design, which eliminates some of the variables in traditional impression-taking. The margin of error is very small, and adjustments can be made chairside.

Lab-made crowns benefit from the skill and artistry of experienced technicians who can hand-layer porcelain, adjust contours and refine anatomy in ways that may be difficult to replicate with a milling machine alone. For highly visible front teeth or complex restorations, this can be an advantage.

Aesthetics

Modern CEREC ceramics produce excellent aesthetic results for most patients. The monolithic (single-block) nature of the material can sometimes limit the subtle colour gradations and translucency seen in natural teeth, but for the vast majority of cases—especially posterior teeth—the difference is negligible.

Lab-made crowns, particularly those using layered porcelain, can achieve highly lifelike results with fine colour matching and translucency. If you're restoring a front tooth and aesthetics are a top priority, your dentist may recommend a lab crown for this reason.

Cost

CEREC crowns do not cost more or less than lab-made crowns. The fee for either option depends on the complexity of the case and the specific materials used, and an exact quote will always follow a thorough examination and discussion of your needs.
