What happens at a CEREC same-day crown appointment?

A CEREC same-day crown is a permanent restoration made using a digital scan, computer-guided design and a milling machine at the practice. For a suitable tooth, this lets us prepare and restore it in one treatment visit, usually without a temporary crown between appointments.

At Park Road Dental in Cheltenham, we value being able to keep the design and manufacture close to the clinical work. The dentist can assess the tooth, work with its digital model and check the completed crown in your mouth within the same workflow.

A scan becomes a design, not an automatic treatment decision

The first decision is whether the tooth needs a crown and whether a same-day restoration is appropriate. Once the tooth is prepared, the scanner records its shape along with information about nearby teeth and the bite.

The computer model is used to design the restoration. A clinical workflow paper describes the linked stages of optical scanning, computer design and in-house manufacturing, emphasising diagnosis, preparation and fitting as part of the process. It describes a digital system other than CEREC, so it supports the workflow principles rather than a claim about one brand. Kurbad, 2019: clinical description of an in-house digital workflow.

The crown is made, then checked

The design guides the milling of a dental material block. Finishing steps depend on the material selected. The crown then needs clinical assessment: how it seats, where it meets the tooth, its contact with neighbouring teeth and how your teeth meet when you bite.

This is why “made by a computer” does not mean “fitted without judgement”. A digital design is a tool for the treating team. It does not replace examining the actual restoration before attaching it.

Does being made quickly mean it is temporary?

No. Same-day manufacture describes the workflow, not a short lifespan. A clinical study following 100 lithium-disilicate crowns made with a CEREC 3 system reported favourable performance over ten years, although debonding, fractures and biological failures did occur. Those findings concern that material and study population; they are not a guarantee for every crown. Fasbinder and colleagues, 2025: ten-year clinical evaluation.

Plan for one treatment visit, with time to do it properly

Ask how long to allow, whether a separate assessment is needed and whether other treatment must happen first. Completing a suitable crown in one visit can mean fewer trips and no interval wearing a temporary crown. It does not mean every tooth should be restored that way, or that follow-up will never be needed.

Crown preparation changes the tooth permanently. Sensitivity, problems with the underlying tooth, loss of retention or ceramic damage can require further care. Your dentist should explain your individual risks and alternatives before proceeding.
