Does my child need fissure sealants?
Fissure sealants are thin coatings placed in the grooves of teeth, usually the back chewing teeth, to help reduce the risk of decay. They can be useful where grooves are difficult to keep clean. Not every child needs them, so a recommendation should relate to your child's teeth and risk. Healthdirect explains fissure sealants.
For a parent, it can be confusing to hear about treatment when a child has no toothache. Sealants are often a preventive measure rather than a repair to a hole. Ask whether the proposed treatment is prevention or whether the dentist has found decay requiring a different approach.
What happens at the appointment?
The tooth is cleaned, prepared and kept dry before the sealant is applied. Some materials are hardened with a dental light. Sealants generally do not require an injection. They can wear over time and need checking at later visits. Healthdirect's procedure overview.
Before the appointment, ask the team how they will explain the steps to your child. If your child struggles to stay still or is worried about the chair, mention it when booking. That information helps the team discuss an appropriate approach rather than discover the concern after the visit starts.
Four questions worth asking
- Which teeth are you recommending sealing? Ask to see where they are and why those teeth were selected.
- What is the alternative plan? Understand the advice if a sealant is not placed now.
- How will you check the sealants? Ask what happens if one wears or comes away.
- What will it cost? Confirm the proposed treatment and any applicable benefit before proceeding.
Sealants do not replace everyday tooth cleaning or dental reviews. Ask for advice that fits your child's age and ability, including where they still need help with brushing.
