Bad breath that keeps coming back: what should you check?
If bad breath keeps returning despite your usual cleaning, a dental assessment is a sensible starting point. Causes within the mouth can include tongue coating, gum problems and retained debris, while some cases need medical assessment. A stronger mouthwash does not necessarily address the reason.
You can mention it without embarrassment
Bad breath, also called halitosis, can affect how comfortable you feel speaking closely with other people. Tell the dentist whether you have noticed it yourself, someone else has mentioned it, or you are worried without being sure. That distinction helps guide a useful conversation.
International consensus guidance recommends assessing the concern and its possible source before choosing treatment. A dental examination is more informative than repeatedly testing your breath at home or trying to diagnose it from a taste. Halitosis assessment guidance.
What might the dentist check?
The assessment may include the gums, teeth, tongue, dental appliances and signs of dryness. Explain whether food catches in a particular place, a denture is hard to clean, or your mouth feels dry. Mention smoking, medicines and relevant medical symptoms too.
Bring the name of any mouthwash or other product you use. If you have tried several, explain what changed and whether the effect lasted. There is no need to arrive with a theory about which bacteria or medical condition is responsible.
What can you do at home?
Keep up regular toothbrushing and cleaning between the teeth, and ask for advice on gentle tongue cleaning if appropriate. Avoid scraping hard enough to make the tongue sore. Clean removable dental appliances as instructed.
Rather than buying several products at once, ask which step addresses the finding in your mouth. For example, a problem with cleaning around a particular appliance calls for advice specific to that appliance. Mint flavour alone does not demonstrate that a cause has been treated.
Why we avoid promising a single cure
A Cochrane review found low- to very-low-certainty evidence for the halitosis treatments it assessed. That does not mean nothing can help. It means research does not justify confident promises that one rinse or technique will work for everyone. Review of halitosis treatments.
Ask what improvement to look for and when to reassess. If an oral cause does not explain the concern, your dentist may recommend medical review rather than ongoing dental treatment without a clear reason.
