Do I need a crown after root canal treatment—and can it be made in one day?

Some teeth need a crown or another protective restoration after root canal treatment, but the decision depends on the tooth that remains. CEREC can help us complete a suitable final crown in one treatment visit. That does not mean the root canal and crown should always be completed on the same day.

Why does the remaining tooth matter?

A 2024 systematic review examined survival and factors affecting root-filled back teeth. The factors identified included remaining tooth structure, cracks, gum support and the band of tooth that a restoration can grip, known as a ferrule. In everyday language, two teeth that have both had root canal treatment may still need different repairs. The amount and condition of the tooth above the gum are part of that decision. The procedure name alone is not enough to choose a restoration.

Does research prove that every root-filled tooth needs a crown?

No. A 2025 systematic review examined restoration type, tooth survival and healing around the root. It highlighted the need for better-quality randomised studies before strong conclusions can be drawn. Research comparing different restoration categories should not be turned into a blanket rule for every patient. Kaaber and colleagues, 2025: review of restoration type after root filling.

Ask the dentist to connect the recommendation to the findings in your tooth. Which parts need protection? Is a full crown necessary, or is another restoration appropriate? What uncertainty remains about the tooth's outlook?

What is the advantage of a same-day crown here?

Once the tooth is ready for its final restoration, an in-house digital workflow can bring preparation, scanning, manufacture and fitting together for suitable cases. That can reduce the visits needed for the crown stage and usually avoids a temporary crown between crown appointments.

The timing still follows the clinical plan. Your dentist may recommend further assessment or treatment before proceeding. Completing a crown quickly is useful only when it is the appropriate next step.

Understand the complete quote and follow-up

Ask whether your plan includes the root canal, any build-up of the tooth and the final restoration. Clarify what will happen between stages and how the tooth will be reviewed. A crown requires tooth preparation and can have complications, including loss of retention, fracture or further problems with the supporting tooth.
