Do I need a filling or a crown? Understanding the recommendation
Being told that a tooth needs a crown can be surprising, especially if a filling has repaired it before. The decision should come with an explanation of the condition of your tooth, the options and their limitations.
A filling replaces a missing or damaged part of a tooth. A crown covers a prepared tooth and may be recommended for a tooth that is badly damaged, weakened or has had root canal treatment. The two treatments do different jobs; neither is automatically the right answer for every broken tooth. Healthdirect explains fillings and dental crowns.
Ask to understand this tooth
Instead of comparing treatments only by their names, ask your dentist to show you what they are concerned about. A useful conversation might include:
- Which part of the tooth needs repair?
- What are the limitations of replacing the filling?
- What would a crown change about the proposed repair?
- Are there other suitable options?
- What uncertainty remains about the tooth's longer-term outlook?
If photographs or X-rays are available, ask the dentist to explain what they show. You should not need to interpret an image yourself to understand a recommendation.
Consider the whole treatment plan
A quote should help you understand what is included, not just give you a headline number. Ask about any preliminary treatment, the final restoration and follow-up. If you are comparing recommendations, make sure they address the same tooth and the same clinical findings.
Crowns require preparation of the tooth and can have complications, including breakage, loosening or problems in the tooth underneath. The remaining tooth still needs cleaning and monitoring. Ask about the benefits and risks relevant to your situation. Healthdirect's crown information.
Where do same-day crowns fit?
Park Road Dental offers CEREC same-day crowns as well as tooth-coloured fillings. The convenience of a same-day option comes after deciding which repair is appropriate. Confirm whether it suits your case and what appointments are needed.
Our separate CEREC versus lab-made crown guide explains those production options. To discuss a damaged tooth at our Cheltenham practice, call (03) 9584 4949. Mention any pain or a recent break when booking.
