Dental veneers in Cheltenham
Veneers are thin, tooth-coloured layers bonded to the front of your teeth to change their shape, length or colour. At Park Road Dental, 155 Park Road, Cheltenham, we design your smile digitally first, so you can see the planned result and decide before any tooth is touched. Call (03) 9584 4949.
What veneers can change
Veneers cover the visible front surface of a tooth. They are used to close small gaps, even out chipped, worn or uneven edges, lengthen short teeth, and improve colour that whitening cannot shift, such as deep internal staining. Because each veneer is custom made, we can change one tooth to match its neighbours or plan several teeth together for a more complete smile makeover.
Porcelain or composite?
There are two main types, and the right one depends on your teeth and goals.
- Porcelain veneers are made from thin ceramic. They hold their colour and shine very well and are hard-wearing, but they usually need a small amount of enamel removed so they sit naturally, which makes them a long-term commitment.
- Composite veneers and bonding are built up in tooth-coloured resin directly on the tooth, often in one visit with little or no drilling. They cost less up front and can be repaired, but they stain and wear faster than porcelain.
We explain the trade-offs honestly at your consultation, including when neither is the best answer.
See your smile before you commit
We start with photos and a digital scan of your teeth, then plan the new shape on screen. That digital design lets you see the proposed length, width and shade, and change your mind before treatment. For many people we can also try the shape in the mouth with a temporary mock-up, so you can see it with your own lips and face.
Veneers, step by step
- Consultation. We check your teeth and gums, talk through what you would like to change and whether veneers, whitening, bonding or aligners would serve you better.
- Digital design. Photos and a 3D scan are used to plan the new shape and shade with you.
- Preparation. For porcelain, a thin layer of enamel is reshaped under local anaesthetic where needed. Composite is usually built directly.
- Fitting. Each veneer is checked for fit, colour and bite, then bonded in place and polished.
When veneers are not the right choice
Veneers are not a fix for every smile. Active decay or gum disease must be treated first. Heavy grinding can chip or loosen veneers, so you may need a night guard. Crooked teeth are sometimes better straightened with clear aligners than covered, which keeps more of your natural tooth. If whitening alone would give you the result you want, we will tell you; see teeth whitening.
Cost and health funds
The cost of veneers depends on how many teeth are involved and whether porcelain or composite is used, so you receive a written quote after your consultation. Cosmetic treatment is often not covered, or only partly covered, by health-fund extras, so check your policy. All major health funds are accepted and claimed on the spot for any eligible items.
Risks and caring for veneers
Porcelain veneers involve removing a small amount of enamel, which cannot be replaced, so they are a long-term choice. Teeth can feel sensitive for a short time after preparation, and veneers can chip, debond or need replacing over time. Avoid biting very hard objects, keep up brushing, flossing and check-ups, and wear a night guard if you grind. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you may wish to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
Veneer FAQs
Do you offer veneers in Cheltenham?
Yes. Park Road Dental at 155 Park Road, Cheltenham, provides porcelain veneers and composite veneers and bonding for patients across Bayside Melbourne, including Mentone, Parkdale, Beaumaris and Hampton.
How much do veneers cost?
The cost depends on how many teeth are treated and whether porcelain or composite is used. After a consultation and digital design you receive a written quote, so you know the cost before any treatment.
What is the difference between porcelain and composite veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells that hold their colour and resist wear but usually need a little enamel removed. Composite veneers are built in tooth-coloured resin, need little or no drilling and cost less, but stain and wear faster.
Do veneers damage your teeth?
Porcelain veneers usually need a thin layer of enamel removed, and that enamel does not grow back, so they are a long-term commitment. Composite bonding often needs little or no tooth removal. We explain what each option means for your teeth before you decide.
Can I see what my veneers will look like first?
Yes. We plan your new smile digitally from photos and a 3D scan, and in many cases can try the shape in your mouth with a temporary mock-up before treatment begins.
How long do veneers last?
There is no fixed lifespan. It depends on the material, your bite, grinding habits and care. Porcelain generally lasts longer than composite, and both last best with good hygiene, regular check-ups and a night guard if you grind.
